TRIA Beauty’s Age-Defying Laser vs. iluminage Skin Smoothing Laser

The laser device energy triggers the body's natural response to generate new collagen, which helps tighten the skin which reduces wrinkles.  But which the laser device is more suitable for you -
TRIA Beauty’s Age-Defying Laser or iluminage Skin Smoothing Laser?

Tria Age-Defying Laser

What it is:
An FDA-cleared, fractional non-ablative laser technology for at-home use.

What it does:

The Age-Defying Laser sends targeted beams of light deep within the skin to support natural collagen production the exact same way that the professional treatments do. It treats skin from within: beams of light penetrate the skin to create microscopic zones of cellular disruption. The skin feels warm, but the surface is left undisturbed. It stimulates natural healing: the body's natural healing process springs to action, working to rapidly heal the treated areas by stimulating natural collagen production. It supports new collagen: as new collagen forms, fine lines, wrinkles, and imperfections are naturally sloughed away.

Research results:

Women who used the laser in clinical studies reported a number of visible improvements to their skin, including enhanced clarity, smoothness, and radiance. After 4 weeks participants reported:
- 76% saw a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles
- 87% saw a more youthful and radiant complexion
- 95% saw smoother skin
- 92% said it works better than any cream or serum

iluminage Skin Smoothing Laser

What it is:
An FDA-cleared at-home laser to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and mouth.

What it does:

This ergonomically advanced at-home laser device allows for convenient, skin-rejuvenating treatments with a more precise application. Created by celebrity designer, Karim Rashid, it improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for a youthful-looking complexion. It delivers pulses of laser light right at the source of wrinkles, triggering the body’s natural response to generate collagen fibers. Safe enough to use at home, yet as effective as professional lasers for the treatment of facial wrinkles, skin is left looking smooth and healthy.

Summary (same device class, different companies):

Same:

1) Wash and dry your face before using them, that is, you begin treatment with a clean dry face.

2) Recommended for use in the evening before bedtime to allow any redness or swelling to diminish overnight.

3) FDA approval laser devices

4) Both are diode lasers, Class 1M Output Wavelength – 1440 nm

5) Both devices seem to last 3-5 years before the battery dies. And without a replacement battery available, you'd have to buy another one after the first one doesn't work.

6) Have a slight sting (this is what my friend said, I felt it was quite painful...), and will cause redness.

Differences:

1) Length of Treatment and Frequency of Use

  • The Tria is to be used daily for 5 days on, 2 days off for 12 weeks. (The U.S. FDA cleared protocol is 5 days a week, 2 days off for 12 consecutive weeks. The European/Canadian protocol is 7 days a week for 8 weeks and then take 4 weeks off. )
  • The iluminage is to be used daily for 5 days on, 2 days off for 4 weeks.

2) Output Laser Energy:

  • The Tria: 5-12 mJ/pulse
  • The iluminage: 1.15395 - 1.5386 J/pulse  (the fluence of the iluminage laser is 3-4 J/cm^2, the spot size is 7mm, so 0.7cm / 2 * pi = 0.38465 cm^2, 1 joule (J) = 1000 millijoule (mJ)).
(Data is from: http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/cdrh_docs/pdf13/K133473.pdf)

3) PowerMy estimates of the output laser energy found that the Iluminage supplies almost 128-231 times more energy per pulse than the Tria device. This probably explains the difference in treatment duration and frequency of use.

4) Price:

                   TRIA Beauty’s Age-Defying Laser : $495
iluminage Skin Smoothing Laser : $595

    5) Use Areas:
                   The Tria: the entire face
The iluminage: around the eyes and mouth

          6) Levels:
The Tria: level 1, level 2, and level 3 (training level 1: 30 seconds per zone, treatment level 2: 1 minute per zone, treatment level 3: 2½ minutes per zone)
The iluminage: level low and high

            7) Automatically Locks:

The Tria: it did not have this problem.
The iluminage: Automatic shut-off for 4 hours after 200 pulses to prevent excessive use.

Which one is better for you?

If you ask me which one is better for you, it's really hard to say. I may ask you which areas you are more interested in to use - face or eye areas? The Tria is easy to carry, and more suitable for the face, since it has a bigger laser head and it will save time for the entire face. Also, because of its bigger laser head, I do not suggest you using it around the eye areas since the laser may hurt your eyes.

The iluminage device is designed for eye and mouth areas, and it has a smaller laser head so it's easier to target the eye areas without hurting your eyes.  If you want to use it for the entire face, and it will take longer than the Tria.

Theoretically, I think the iluminage has more power, because the iluminage supplies almost 128-231 times more energy per pulse than the Tria device. I think that is also why the Tria is for 5 days on, 2 days off for 12 weeks, and the iluminage is to be used daily for 5 days on, 2 days off for 4 weeks.

But something I don't like about this beauty device is that it locks after 200 pulses. The laser treatment head is very small and the instruction book suggests that we should move the laser head about 1/4 inch apart after per pulse, so you can only cover a small area, and it takes a long time for the whole face. Sometimes you may miss some areas.

The iluminage only has two levels (high and low levels), but the tria has three levels.

Training Level 1: 30 seconds per zone
Treatment Level 2: 1 minute per zone
Treatment Level 3: 2½ minutes per zone

(The instruction book suggests that you should separate your face into 4 zones.)

Even the iluminage has more energy per pulse, but the level 3 of the tria has longer treatment time, so I am not sure which result is better. For me, the both devices work perfectly on my face, and I love both of them!

            1. "The iluminage supplies almost 128-231 times more energy per pulse than the Tria device"- does it mean it's more effective? If I don't mine the time it takes per treatment and I want to use it in my whole face- which one would you recommend better? Thank you!

              1. Hi.Did you avoid treating the areas with the tria that you were treating with the Iluminage. Or did you double up?
